2-Day City Tours: Jinja and Kampala City Tour

Day 1: Jinja Adventure – The Source of the Nile Experience

After an early breakfast at your lodge or hotel in Kampala, our professional driver-guide will meet and brief you about the day’s adventure. You’ll then set off on a scenic 2-hour drive to Jinja, a charming and historical town located in eastern Uganda, famously known as the source of the world’s longest river—the Nile.

As you journey toward Jinja, enjoy the beautiful countryside views, including lush plantations, small towns, and rolling hills. A major highlight of the drive is a stopover at Mabira Forest, Uganda’s largest remaining natural tropical rainforest. Here, you’ll take a short nature walk guided by a forest ranger. Keep your eyes peeled for Black-and-white Colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and over 300 bird species, including the Great Blue Turaco and forest hornbills. The forest is also home to countless butterfly species and medicinal plants.

Continue onward to Jinja Town, arriving at the iconic Owen Falls Dam, a hydroelectric power plant that plays a key role in powering Uganda. A few minutes’ drive will take you to the Source of the Nile, where explorer John Hanning Speke first discovered the Nile River’s exit point from Lake Victoria. At this historical and geographical marvel, you’ll take a boat ride to the actual point where the Nile begins its 6,650 km journey to the Mediterranean Sea.

Afterward, for those seeking an adrenaline rush, you may opt for an optional activity like white-water rafting, bungee jumping, or quad biking along the Nile’s banks—some of the most thrilling adventure experiences in East Africa.

On your return to Kampala, you will have a cultural stopover at Ssezibwa Falls, located along the Kampala-Jinja highway. The falls are not only visually stunning but also spiritually significant to the Baganda people, believed to have been born of a woman, giving them a unique mythical status. Local traditional healers often visit the area for rituals and blessings.

Arrive back in Kampala in the evening and check in at your hotel. Recommended accommodations include:

  • Kampala Serena Hotel – Luxury with lush gardens and spa facilities

Day 2: Kampala Cultural and Historical City Tour

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up for a full-day Kampala City Tour. This tour is a deep dive into Uganda’s capital—a city bustling with life, history, and culture.

Your first stop will be Makerere University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa. From here, proceed to the Bahá’í Temple, the only one of its kind on the African continent. The serene grounds offer spectacular panoramic views of Kampala and provide a moment of peaceful reflection.

Next, visit the Namugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrine, a sacred Christian pilgrimage site where 22 Catholic and Anglican converts were martyred in the late 1800s. The shrine is not only a spiritual site but also an architectural wonder.

The tour continues to the Uganda Museum, where you’ll explore exhibits on Uganda’s cultural heritage, including traditional musical instruments, tribal attire, and archaeological finds. Afterwards, head to the National Theatre and Crafts Village, where you can shop for authentic handmade souvenirs and enjoy local art performances if available.

As you explore the heart of Kampala, your guide will take you through the city’s vibrant streets to see notable landmarks such as:

  • The Post Office (General Post Office)

  • Parliament of Uganda

  • The Central Business District, filled with shops, restaurants, and historical buildings

In the late afternoon, visit the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the burial place of four former Kings (Kabakas) of Buganda and serves as a cultural and spiritual center for the Baganda people. The site provides a fascinating insight into Buganda’s royal traditions and architecture, including the unique thatched dome structure.

Return to your hotel for dinner and a relaxing evening. Overnight stay as per Day 1.
